The Last Resort, Kathmandu
Our Review by author Bradley Mayhew
The Last Resort sits in a beautiful spot on a ridge above the Bhote Kosi river, 101km (61mi) from Kathmandu and just 12km (7.5mi) from the Tibet border. Access is by suspension bridge across the river, and it's here that Nepal's only bungy jump is set up. More »

Destination of the month

Portugal
Portugal is not one of your big-ticket countries but therein lies the appeal. It's tucked away in a corner of Europe and it's a land of old-fashioned charm, with medieval castles and picture-perfect villages scattered over meandering coastlines and flower-covered hillsides.

Portugal's capital, Lisbon, and its northern rival, Porto, are gems among the urban streetscapes of western Europe, with riverside views, cobblestone streets and rattling trams. Its narrow lanes are clustered with old book and record stores, tiny boutiques and an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and clubs. Here's an excerpt from our Portugal guide to whet your appetite.

Lisbon Tram

ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST
One Week / Lisbon to Porto

Start in Lisbon, making sure not to neglect café culture, fado (traditional, melancholic Portuguese singing) in the Alfama, or Bairro Alto's street parties. After this urban revelry, head north for a relaxing stay in the hillsides of Sintra, then make your way to the hilltop village of Óbidos. Next, drink in the heady architecture of Alcobaça and Batalha. After all that culture, take a stroll along the coastal pinewood of Pinhal de Leiria before dropping in at the colourful university town of Coimbra. Read more »

Putting the "There" in Oakland (Oakland)
Don't let Gertrude Stein fool you. To hear her talk about this city that rests contentedly in the shadow of its vain sister San Francisco, one might think that Oakland is deader than Colma. Never. Oakland throbs with life.
Surrogate Sunshine in Stumptown (Portland)
I left Portland on August 7, 1998 after a year of living there. It has haunted my dreams ever since. Their city may see little sunshine from October through May, but Portlanders find ways to make their own.
If Mars Had a Capital, They'd Call It Salt Lake City, Utah (Salt Lake City)
Hands down, Salt Lake is the most surreal city in the continental forty-eight. The Mormon Temple is otherworldly, a vision from a Flash Gordon flick. The shores of the Great Salt Lake are a veritable moonscape. Read more »

Our correspondents are getting up to all sorts around the world and the travel blog is going off. Ghita Loebenstein was at the recent South By Southwest Music Expo in Texas – it's a must for music lovers, so put the next one in your diary for March 2008. Meanwhile, check out Ghita's experience.

Cannes, Sundance and Glastonbury eat your heart out. If you're anywhere near Texas in March and have a penchant for great independent film, good music and week-long parties, the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin is where you want to be. Read More »

The Man Who Fell to Earth
Today I thought it would be a good idea if I paid someone to fly me up to 12,000 feet and throw me out of a plane. Willingly. Luckily with instructor and parachute attached. I drove forty minutes northwards to Lake Taupo, which is apparently the cheapest place in the world to skydive, at only NZ$149 to fall screaming from 12,000 feet.

So with some trepidation I was suited up and, ahem, asked to dance for the Ground Video. Luckily I saw the same uncertainty I was feeling mirrored in the nervous, pallid faces of my fellow jumpers: a kiwi guy (who'd been given this as a birthday present from his girlfriend. I enquired whether he knew of any reason why she would want him dead), a German couple, a French girl and an American girl.
