In this Issue
Our new Encounter guides have launched and we are loving them. They are all about homing in on a city's secrets, dodging the tourist trails and taking to the place like you live there. These pocket-sized dynamo guides are jammed with colour photos and the recommendations of locals. So this month, Comet is going small-time, highlighting specific neighbourhoods rather than entire countries. Come on in!

Destination of the month
Shop: Las Vegas Encounter Guide
Las Vegas
Ah, Vegas. Sure it's got enough neon to melt your retinas and enough buffet fare to clog the hardiest arteries, but there's something about Sin City that keeps the peeps coming back. Yes, all 30 million of them, annually. And while many of those millions may come for the 99c shrimp cocktails and the shrines to Elvis, just as many come for the designer shopping, haute cuisine and unexpected artistic gems. Here's a sampler of the obvious, and not so obvious, delights of Las Vegas.

Erawan Waterfall, Kanchanaburi
If a little dip into paradise is what you're after, this is it. Do it like the locals and swim with all your clothes on in Erawan's seven tiers of bluer than blue waters, enveloped in lush, almost mystical greenery. You'll be enchanted, I promise.
Don Hoi-Lod, Samut Songkhram
'Hoi-lod' literally means 'straw-like shellfish', and this is precisely where you can sample the most unrivalled hoi-lod dishes in the world, if you've ever tried one, that is. Better yet, this gastronomic delight is only an hour south of Bangkok.
Wat Chee-Jun, Pattaya
Despite Pattaya's less than dignified reputation, one can still make a go at spiritual enlightenment just 20 minutes away. Wat Chee-Jun is not a temple, but a sheer cliff face, adorned with gold leaves in the shape of Buddha-a truly remarkable feat. Read More »

» Planet Blog
Our travel blog has authors reporting back from all the hidden crevices in the world, where they unearth some great finds. Did you know Melbourne is famous for its graffiti? True dat! Check this post:

Amazing that a little bit of cardboard and a pssssssssht of spray-paint can turn a grimy city wall into something worth looking at. Melbourne is so proud of its (not-so) secret stencil society that it now celebrates its passion for the not-quite-legal street art with an annual festival.

» Staff Secrets
Everyone here at Lonely Planet loves to travel, and we're pretty vocal about our favourite haunts and experiences. So we thought we'd introduce a new section where Lonely Planet staff share their best recommendations with you.
Max Fish Bar

This month, Jane from our Melbourne office recommends that anyone headed to New York should drop in to Max Fish, a bar on Ludlow St, because 'it's not precious. It doesn't matter what you look like. There's art on the walls, the soundtrack is pure rock and the drinks are strong and cheap. And that's pretty much all I'm looking for.'

Make a Difference

Australian Aid International is an international non-profit, non-government organisation committed to mitigating the double burden of poverty and poor access to quality health care in regions where health systems have collapsed.

Quote of the Month

'There is no moment of delight in any pilgrimage like the beginning of it.' Charles Dudley Warner

Travel Tip of the Month

We polled some of the Lonely Planet folk for that elusive 'what do you never travel without?' item. Gideon from our Melbourne office swiftly replied 'Toenail clippers. You just don't think of them when you're packing, but when you're travelling and walking all over the place, you realise how much you miss them.' Don't leave home without them, folks!
