The dreaming and planning issue

The pleasures of travel don't begin and end on the plane. Dreaming and planning, hitting the road, and the mingled joy and sadness of coming back home - it's all part of the deal. So come with us on the whole sweet journey, from that first castle in the air to the snow dome on the mantelpiece.

Inspiration Point - where to get your ideas from

 Inspiration Point

It's that picture of a Tibetan mountain taped above your office computer. It's your friend's story of tiger-spotting in Sumatra. It's the Portuguese music in your local café. It's inspiration - all the things that get us sniffing the wind, surfing the net and finally, packing our bags.

Where do you get your travel inspiration from? Brochures? Blogs? Thorn Tree users have some good suggestions on how to plant those ideas.

If throwing a dart at a world map isn't your thing, check out potential destinations online. You can find all those details from where to go, when to go and what to see when you're there.

Still not sure where to aim your boots next? Get inspired by videos of Brazil, Istanbul and Bolivia.

Staff Tip:

When I'm trying to decide where to go next, I watch travel videos. It gives me a taste of what it might be like and if it's going to suit me. I'm going to upload the clips of my next trip so I can do the same for travellers.

Lonely Planet Travel Checklist

 Sounds Like a Plan

Ok, so the cherry festival in Italy clashes with the air guitar championships in Finland, you don't have a phrase book for Borneo and you haven't packed a jacket. Hmmm, perhaps it's time for a bit of planning...

The idea of a trip makes you feel all wind-in-the-hair, but you've gotta tick all those boring boxes - visas, insurance, budgets, yada yada yada - before you leave. The Travel Checklist puts the pen in your hand. You could also win a US$2500 STA travel voucher by telling us your best travel tip.

Ever dreamt of travel planning software or a cheap flight wishlist Or do you prefer to fly by the seat of your pants

If you can't decide when to go to where you want to go, timing your trip to coincide with a festival will make your mind up. Spend a European summer soaking up the music festivals - you've always wanted to see what Roskilde's really like, right? - or hit Antipodean music sprees like Golden Plains and V Festival. Keep track with our 2008 festivals calendar - super cheap and super shiny.

Think before you lock that final zip and avoid the nightmare of packing disasters. Instead, become a lean, mean packing machine.

Keep it light - buy your guide books by the individual chapter. Perfect for those times plans change whilst on the road. Choose the chapters you need, then download and print them. Check out our expanded range - you can even download them before the new books have hit the shelves.

Watch it!

Traveller Tip:
Deciding whether to travel solo or duo?
'Your best buddy at home may not be the ideal travelling companion - you're going to be together all day every day for a long time. Before committing to going, try a long weekend away together to see if you're compatible.'
-Hamayan Ahmad, traveller

 Get Moving

And at last, you're on the move...remembering how to make a clothes line out of dental floss, learning how to get a toddler round Beijing. Hanging out of a balloon basket to get that perfect snap or hanging out in a café with your journal and a gin. Ah, this is the life...

Don't be daunted by the thought of hitting the road with your Mini-Mes. Read up on real life experiences of travelling with kids in India and the Middle East.

Tacky-bad or kitschy-good? Get a list of the best cheap world souvenirs.

Bamboozled by multiple flash options? Get some photography advice from the Thorn Tree or see the results of travelling around Australia with a Super 8. Lost your camera while out and about? We found this great site for found cameras that may help you get it back.

Don't leave home without a purpose-built travel journal. Go full-colour cover or moody black for those Sylvia Plath moments. Prefer a mouse to a pen? Create your journal online.

Staff Tip:

I don't like pulling out a camera on the road so instead I use my MP3 player to record eagle cries, temple bells, busy markets...it's much less intrusive than taking a photograph and sound is often more evocative than pictures.
- Chris H.

Hot Shots

First impressions last. See how Lonely Planet author Robert Reid's first 24 hours in Mexico shaped up. Bucket included.

First 24 hours in Mexico

Waiting, cold and lonely, at the Greyhound Station? Live your own black-and-white road movie.

 There's No Place Like Home

Home, strange home. Everything feels a little weird, huh? But you also get to see your city with fresh eyes...catch up with friends...and find a place for that wayang puppet. And soon enough, that travel radar starts twitchin' - hmmm, maybe cycling to Kathmandu? - and you're in dreamland all over again.

How do you cope with the post-travel comedown? The doctor is IN on the Thorn Tree's homecoming blues thread.

You might've had a twinge of homesickness while you were away, but ever thought of what you'll miss when you come home?

Now, what to do with all you learnt on the road now you're home?

Staff Tip:

Music can paint a soundtrack to your travels. Keep doing this when you get back to your hometown so you'll observe your city more atmospherically. I like to use the Dandy Warhols' aptly named album, The Dandy Warhols Come Down.
- Jane

Traveller Tip:

'If being at home is starting to feel like the worst thing ever, do something you missed when on the road - wander down to your local for a game of pool, take a hot bath when you want to, hop on your beloved bicycle for a spin. Home comforts can compete with on-the-road thrills in subtle ways.'
- Mal Southwick, traveller

 Glittering Highlights

Well that's another year of travel under our belts. The boarding passes are filed away and we're wondering 'where to next?'. There's nothing better than a first-hand recommendation, so we decided to ask the Lonely Planet staff for the highlight of their recent travels.

Staff Photo: Cappadocia

'Arriving in Cappadocia at dawn and watching the balloons take off.'
- Janet

'Standing in the warm water on Cape Tribulation as a thunder storm rolled in, with no-one else around.'
- Emily

'Being so amazed by the impressive serene stone faces of the Bayon temple at Angor in Cambodia that I bought a 4kg solid wood-carving replica and lugged it around for another three weeks. Worth every minute of pain.'
- Marita

'Bus arrived in Montpellier at 3am in November, but we couldn't get into our pension until 9am so we opened up our sleeping bags and camped out in front of the building. A man and woman (client and worker) emerged from our pension. She mumbled something in French, squeezed my cheeks and gave me and my wife a big warm kiss. Mine was more wet than warm. Her client then kicked the door of the pension and fled. This woke up the sleepy-eyed owner, who showed us to our warm room.'
- Doug

Staff Photo: Franz Josef Glacier

'Walking a glacier is tough enough. On the day I chose to climb Franz Josef Glacier the unremitting West Coast rain had flooded out the usual entrance to the glacier. The half-hour moderate foot walk had now become a two-hour tramp through mud and knee-high rivers, with chains and ropes for assistance. The view from the midpoint of this extraordinary glacier made it all worthwhile.'
- Chris

 Event Planner

Need a Reason to Travel?

If you're already planning this year's travel, you might want your itinerary to coincide with some of these fantastic festivals, taken from Bluelist 2008's events section:

Argentina: Buenos Aires

FEB - COSQUÍN ROCK » ARGENTINA
Say yes to tinnitus and head to cultural capital Córdoba for the big beats and festival vibe that make Cosquín Rock, well, rock.

MAR - PARO TSECHU » BHUTAN
Book early to catch a glimpse of Bhutan's biggest festival of masked dance, Paro Tsechu - it's immensely popular. The festival runs from 17 to 21 March, with the highlight performances at the hillside Rinchen Pung Dzong (literally ‘fortress on a heap of jewels').

APR - MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX » MALAYSIA
Join the revheads headed for Sepang International Circuit in early April, when a 45-minute drive (no speeding, now) south of Kuala Lumpur will get you to the Formula One circus of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

MAY - KHAU VAI LOVE MARKET » VIETNAM
Set your heart aflutter on 1 May, when the love market opens for business in the town of Khau Vai in northwest Vietnam. The locals have been swapping wives and husbands and finding matches for lonely hearts for over 100 years.

JUN - TYNEDALE BEER FESTIVAL » ENGLAND
Soak up the suds in the northeast England town of Corbridge, where the Tynedale Beer Festival brings out the best of local and borrowed brews for a mid-June session.

JUL - CARNIVAL OF SAN IGNACIO DE MOXOS » BOLIVIA
Three days of fiesta fun: dancing, processions, colourful costumes and enchanting music. It all begins on the last day of July as the rainforest village of San Ignacio de Moxos celebrates its patron saint.

AUG - HERCEG NOVI FILM FESTIVAL » MONTENEGRO
Enjoy the summer days and nights at this open-air festival of feature films. All screenings are in the historic walled seaside town of Herceg Novi on Montenegro's Adriatic coast.

SEP - TEUILA FESTIVAL » SAMOA
Top off your trip at Samoa's top event, the annual Teuila Festival. This week of cultural celebration features longboat races on Apia Harbour, a Samoan-size serving of food and music, sports, a floral parade and, of course, the crowning of Miss Teuila.

OCT - DÍA DE LA HISPANIDAD » NICARAGUA
Enjoy a slice of Spanish culture, food and entertainment in Central America as Nicaragua's Spanish-speaking community celebrates its heritage on Spain's national day, 12 October.

NOV - JAZZ IN RIADS FESTIVAL » MOROCCO
Feel the jazz rhythms resonate throughout the oldest of Morocco's Imperial cities, Fez. Performances take place in some of the fabulously restored traditional houses in and around the medina.

DEC - ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH » USA
Enjoy a fine fusion of music, art, architecture and film at this annual festival, the sister show of the famous event in Basel, Switzerland. Exhibitions are located all over the city's Art Deco District.

 Top Destinations

What was on our wish list for 2007? Our picks of countries on the rise included places as diverse as Finland, Gabon, Jordan, Madagascar, Namibia, Northern Ireland, Ecuador and Turkmenistan - and we couldn't wait to get out there. So what did you make of our top tips? Here are some travellers' experiences in some of the countries we nominated - everything from wandering Romanian caves to watching the rice harvest in Laos.

Featured Bluelist
-Be- Romania
By: romaniamosaic

Sighisoara's Citadel
Be enchanted in Sighisoara, Romania's oldest town. Nine medieval artisan towers guard peaceful cobblestone streets and a lively town square. Be haunted by ghosts of the past- including that of Vlad Tepes (Dracula) born in Sighisoara. Be sure to check out the covered stairway leading up to the German cemetery and the clock tower.

Painted Monasteries in Bucovina
Be amazed by the beauty of monasteries painstakingly hand-painted by monks in the 15th and 16th centuries. These peaceful works of art were funded by Romanian military heroes seeking to honor God after battle. Marvel at the intricate detail and the vibrant colors that continue to shine after years of weathering and communist oppression.

Bear Cave in Chiscau
Be awed by time's accumulation of dripping stalactites and stoic stalagmites. This cave, named after skeletons of the extinct cave bears found there, is full of mind-boggling formations- such as the monk at the altar, the rocket ship, and the organ. More >
